Curriculum
Mathematics
All children from Reception Class to Seniors follow SPMG – a widely
used course which emphasises development through activity. This
learning approach is fun for the children while they are developing
mathematical concepts and skills in a thorough and consistant way.
Science
Basic Science concepts are introduced through practical experiments
which encourage children from an early age to observe and question
their environment.
English Subjects
Barlavento pupils reach a very high standard in reading, writing and
oral skills. In Reception Class four and five-year-olds enjoy their
introduction to letters through stories, puppets and structured
play.
Later, punctuation, spelling, grammar and sentence construction
are taught and children soon begin to create their own poems and
stories for display.
Art and Craft
These form part of every day life at Barlavento particularly for the
younger children. Throughout their stay pupils are encouraged to
draw, paint and create art and craft relating to current projects.
Our classrooms and dining-room display a wealth of pupils’ artwork.
Music and Drama
We believe that all children have a natural interest in music and
drama. They are introduced to the joys of singing, developing an
awareness of melody and rhythm. Each class encourages drama in some
form throughout the school year. The annual highlight is our
Musical production in which every child performs.
Geography and History
We follow a wide syllabus suited to an international school.

Religious Education
Non-denominational Christianity based on the Holy Bible is aimed at
instilling moral and social values with religious and racial
tolerance. The principal religions of the world are studied by older
pupils.
Portuguese
Although Portuguese is a foreign language subject in our school, we do understand the importance for our pupils to be able to communicate in the country in which they live. Our Portuguese teacher works very hard to overcome the difficulties of teaching a language to pupils of very different levels within each class. As all our staff speak fluent Portuguese we encourage the use of the language. We also suggest to parents that they enroll their children in Sports, Ballet or Musical groups in the community to give them the opportunity to use the language in their leisure time.
Computer Technology
We have six computers with Internet connection in our Computer room where pupils from Senior Class and Junior 2 have lessons in groups of five or six twice a week. There are also computers in the classrooms of Junior 2 and Seniors, for daily use.
Physical Education
This includes basic gymnastics, mobility and strengthening exercises
as well as instruction in basketball, hockey, football, handball,
netball, volleyball and athletics.
